Fabric Heart

Fabric Heart

If you have a variety of fabric scraps, this is the perfect Valentine’s Day decoration to make.

Over the centuries, Valentine’s Day evolved and by the 18th century, gift-giving and exchanging hand-made cards had become common in England. The cards made of lace, ribbons, and featuring cupids and hearts eventually spread to the American colonies. However, the tradition of Valentine’s cards did not become widespread in the United States until the 1850s, when Esther A. Howland began mass-producing them. Today, the holiday is a booming commercial success. According to the Greeting Card Association, 25% of all cards sent each year are valentines.

Supplies:

  • Heart-shape pattern (3” x 2-1/4”)
  • Five 5” x 5” pieces of fabric
  • Double-stick tape
  • Scotch tape

Directions:

  1. Use the heart pattern and cut two hearts from each fabric scrap.
  2. On a solid surface, overlap each fabric heart to create one large heart. The finished size will be 8” x 6”.
  3. Use the double-stick tape to attach each heart to the one beneath it.
  4. Carefully turn over the large heart and use the scotch tape to firm the design.

Use the large heart as a coaster, hang on the refrigerator, or string several together and hang from your mantle. Or make one and leave a note for your special someone.

Happy Valentine’s Day!
