A journey of secrets, lies, revenge, and death.

Tragedy strikes the lives of two children in 1968. A house fire kills Sam’s father and brother. Three weeks later, Sam’s mother disappears and Sam must grow up with strict grandparents.  Mason’s mother and sister die in a fiery automobile accident. Mason’s father moves them to a new city in Iowa to forget about the life they left behind.

Twelve years later, Mason receives mysterious notes and phone calls about his past. Mason searches for the truth about the family he never knew, only to discover secrets that force him to choose between his father and the woman he loves.

Mason and Sam set out on separate quests to determine who is telling the truth, who is keeping secrets, and who must die.

22nd Annual Writer’s Digest Self-Published Book Awards

Read what Judge 22 from the 22nd Annual Writer’s Digest Self-Published Book Awards had to say about Secrets Can Be Deadly.

SECRETS CAN BE DEADLY, by Nancy Roe, is a well-written book that held my interest throughout. I found it difficult to put it down and, as a result, read it well into the night. Nancy Roe does an excellent job in establishing the characters slowly, and in advancing the plot with ever more enticing details.

Her writing is taut in places, creating tension in the plot and the reader. The dialogue helps define the characters and moves the plot along. This book is a real page turner, and the author creates the tension without resorting to unnecessary violence.

I’ve rarely found a novel where the writing is as controlled and where the author accomplishes exactly what she wants to do without resorting to melodrama. Also, her use of details makes the scenes come to life. I loved the details about the villain and how she resorted to little tricks to get the result she wanted. It seems so real! Here is an author who takes real life situations, stirs in fleshed-out believable characters, adds simply great dialogue, and keeps the reader awake past bedtime. Perhaps it is the Iowa location that makes it all work so well.

This novel is altogether a good read, and I look forward to reading more from this author.

Readerly Musings Review

In November 2013, the blog “Readerly Musings” reviewed my book and gave it 5 STARS!

Her final words:  In Secrets Can Be Deadly, Nancy Roe tells an incredible story about the damage secrets and lies can cause. It is a hard-to-put-down read filled with believable, interesting, and well-developed characters and a many-layered mystery that keeps you guessing.
