National Fig Newton Day

National Fig Newton Day

Did you know that National Fig Newton Day is celebrated every year on January 16th?

Newtons are Nabisco’s trademarked version of the fig roll – a pastry filled with fig paste.

Up until the 19th century, many physicians believed most illnesses were related to digestion problems. As a remedy, they recommended a daily intake of biscuits and fruit. Fig rolls served as an ideal solution to their advice.

In 1891, Philadelphia baker and fig-lover Charles Roser invented and patented a machine, which inserted fig paste into a thick pastry dough. The Kennedy Biscuit Company (which eventually merged with the New York Biscuit Company to form Nabisco) then purchased Roser’s recipe and began mass production. The company named the pastries after the town of Newton, Massachusetts.

In 2012, Nabisco dropped the word “Fig” from the product’s name. Since then, new flavors have hit the shelves, including strawberry, peach, and apple.

Enjoy a Fig Newton today with coffee, tea, or juice.

As I hadn’t checked e-mails before lunch, I would have taken a picture of the fresh fig off our tree that my husband and I had for lunch, along with a starfruit off another of our trees!
