Puzzle Strategy

Do you like to jigsaw puzzles? I do. I’m always looking for colorful, intriguing puzzles.

Do you get frustrated or lose interest when putting a puzzle together? It could be because you haven’t implemented a strategy. Planning how you pick a puzzle and the steps to put it together, could make you enjoy your next puzzle experience.

1. Choose a puzzle. Pick a puzzle that fits your level. Don’t try a 3,000 piece puzzle if your skill level is 500 pieces. The number of pieces in your puzzle will make your time more enjoyable.

2. Have an-end plan. Are you going to glue the puzzle together and frame it, or will you just deconstruct it and pass along to a friend or family member? If you plan on using glue, place wax paper on your surface before putting the puzzle together. This will protect your surface when using glue.

3. Choose a workspace. Will you work on the dining table (where you’ll have to move the pieces frequently) or will you have a dedicated area to work? Make sure the space you will use is a flat surface that can accommodate the finished size of the puzzle.

4. Choose how to categorize the pieces. You can use shoe box lids, plastic containers, or paper plates so sort the pieces.

– Sort pieces by color.
– Sort pieces by shape.
– Sort pieces by pattern.

5. Find all the edge and corner pieces. Constructing a border gives you a defined space that you’ll work on inside as you fit pieces together.

6. Work on small sections at a time. Instead of trying to work on the entire puzzle, try working on small portions of the puzzle. This process can keep you motivated.

7. Don’t give up. If you get tired or bored, take a break. Your puzzle should be fun. A fresh look at it later may help you see things you missed.

8. Finish the puzzle.  Congratulate yourself on a job well done! Will your next puzzle be the same size and piece number, or are you up for a bigger challenge?
