National Fried Chicken Day

National Fried Chicken Day is day to enjoy crisp and tasty, finger licking good fried chicken. This holiday is always celebrated on July 6.

Fried chicken is typically made by dipping the chicken in an egg and milk batter, then seasoned and fried.

Did you know fried chicken was first popularized by the Scottish? Prior to World War II, fried chicken was considered a delicacy that was served on special occasions.

Here’s a little more chicken trivia:

  • When it was first cooked and served, fried chicken was a sign of wealth.
  • There are people in the U.S. with the last name “Chicken.” None have the first name “Fried.”
  • The fear of chickens is called Alektorophobia.
  • More than half of all chicken entrees ordered in restaurants are for fried chicken.
  • Chickens were originally domesticated and bred for cockfighting, not for food.

I bet I know what you’re having for dinner (wink, wink).

We did have fried chicken last week on vacation. The restaurants in the town would not take reservations, and with a wait time of one and one-half hours with 2 little ones, we walked to the grocery store, got some fried chicken with a couple sides, and went back to the house and ate the fried chicken dinner outside because it was such a beautiful evening! I personally have not made fried chicken in years….most of the chicken we eat is unbreaded chicken filets or thighs baked to pick off the bone)!
