National Pretzel Day

Today is National Pretzel Day. This day celebrates pretzels of all shapes and sizes.

How do you like your pretzels? Long, thin, thick, twisted, crunchy, or chewy? What about salted or unsalted? With mustard or cheese?

Did you know pretzels are believed to the world’s oldest snack? Pretzels date back to 610AD in Southern France. Catholic Monks baked think strips of dough into the shape of a child’s arms folded in prayer. They added a little salt and the pretzel industry was born.

While pretzels were first baked in France, pretzels have been popular in German bakeries for hundreds of years. In the United States, the first pretzel was baked in 1850 in Lititz, Pennsylvania by Julius Sturgis.

What kind of pretzel will you eat today?
